---------softcover with stiff card covers, about 6.5 x 8.5 inches, a Near Fine copy with a crease to rear flap, 326 pages, colour and b&w photos, from ATLANTIpedia: Robert Argod (1920-2000) was born in la Drôme, France. His adult life was devoted to maritime matters with a particular emphasis on the study of Polynesian shipbuilding and navigational techniques. This led to the posthumous publication in English of a book that controversially suggested that the Polynesians had originated in an ice-free Antarctica. Even more contentious was his belief that this habitable state of the continent was a consequence of polar displacement on a dramatic scale. He claims that such a catastrophic event had occurred more than once within the memory of man and that it is reflected in the mythologies of various peoples. ---His inspiration has come from the work of Charles Hapgood, who did much to draw attention to medieval sea maps that were apparently based on much more ancient charts which showed an Antarctic coast free of ice. His theory is also founded on the concept of accelerated tectonic movements whose consequences are recorded in the ancient literature of many cultures. However in my opinion, Argod does not offer a credible mechanism that could explain such a cataclysmic series of events. He notes the Atlantis story of Plato as just one such record and specifically interprets the 8,000 years since the catastrophe as ‘moon-years’, which would recalibrate the date of the event to around the 13th century BC, coincident with the Egyptian battles with the Sea Peoples.---, ---chapters include: Preface; Introduction; The origin in myth - Polynesia; China; Japan; Iceland; Egypt; Greece; Rome; India; Mesopotamia; The Bible --- The Antarctic - The poles; Cartography; Uncertainties about the length of climatic eras; Continental drifts; The glaciations of the Quaternary ers --- Twilight of the gods - Polynesia; China; iceland; Mexico and Guatemala; The Sahara; Egypt; Greece; Rome; India; Mesopotamia; The Bible; new Chronology ---Conclusion ---Bibliography, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

----------hardcover, a Fine copy in a Fine dustjacket, 390 pages, b&w images, ---"After ten years of intensive study of Indian art and philosophy, Joseph Campbell, at 50, finally embarked on a journey to India. Searching for the transcendent (Brahman), he found instead stark realities: growing nationalism, religious rivalry, poverty, and a prevalent culture of what he called “baksheesh,” or alms. This journal chronicles the disillusionment and revelation that would change the course of Campbell’s life and study, and his transition from professor to counterculture icon. Balancing Campbell’s astute explorations of mythology and history are his often amusing observations of a sometimes frustrating alien culture and his fellow Western travelers. This account also includes personal photographs, specially commissioned maps, and illustrations redrawn from Campbell’s own hand."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a lightly rubbed Near Fine dustjacket, former owner's bookplate on verso of front cover, 393 pages, b&w engravings by Firmin, offerings from Kevin Crossley-Holland, Alan Garner; Thomas Keightley; Thomas Crofton Croker; Robert Chambers; Augustus Hare; W Carew Hazlitt; James Reeves; Andrew Lang; James Orchard Halliwell; Dora E Yates; Sean O'Sullivan; Ruth Tongue; Wirt Sikes; T Gwynn Jones; and many others, over 65 tales, ---"In the folk stories of Britain, the land teems with bogles and boggarts, witches and wolves, ghosts and giants. Mischievous Yallery Brown deceives the unwary, the great black bull of Norroway fights the devil, and Siôn Dafydd finds that woman's work is not as easy as he thought. By turns comic and frightening, revealing and strange, these tales evoke a shared heritage, unique to the British Isles. There is a fascination in tracing their roots in Celtic mythology, history, superstition and common rural experiences, but in the end, it is the magical pageantry of the stories themselves which continues to enchant. As Kevin Crossley-Holland says, 'They are doorstep stories leading to a better understanding of ourselves and our own world'. Some are written down exactly as early collectors heard them told on winter evenings or amid the hum and bustle of spinning sheds, echoing with the cadences of vanished dialects. Others are retold by well-known writers like Alan Garner or W. B. Yeats, who add poetic flesh to the bones of story. 'It is the mark of a good fairy-story ... that however wild its events, however fantastic or terrible the adventures, it can give to child or man that hears it "---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

------------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a lightly rubbed Very Good+ dustjacket, signed and inscribed by the author, 227 pages, ---"In an eye-opening collection of essays, aptly titled "Extrasensory Deception", Gordon, a professional magician and journalist, takes on psychics, astrologers, myth-makers and other assorted purveyors of the paranormal, and shines the light of common sense into the murky darkness that is the world of paranormal claims. Culled from Gordon's weekly columns for the "Toronto Sunday Star", this book collects his commentaries on 'The Paranormal', 'Prophecy', 'Spirits', 'Superstition', 'Pseudoscience', 'Higher Life', and 'Truth'. Not one to pull punches, he gives a hard-hitting, often humorous, first-person account of his adventures among some of the 'big names' in the paranormal movement, including New Age heroine Shirley MacLaine, faith-healer Peter Popoff, UFO guru Stanton (the Flying Saucer Physicist) Friedman, and psychic superstar Uri Geller. Gordon exposes the methods used by 'psychics' and other practitioners of 'extrasensory' powers for what they are - the sleight-of-hand and mentalist tricks that he and other magicians have used on stage for decades. The focus of the book is not, however, to merely debunk the excessive and unverifiable claims made by the paranormalists. As Gordon states, 'It seems clear. Once a person comes under the influence of these supernatural beliefs, his or her mind ceases to function at a normal level of reasoning'. By laying bare the dangers of uncritical acceptance of such claims, this book makes an impassioned plea for an increased use of rational intelligence and critical thinking skills for solving our problems."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

---------hard cover, about 6.25 x 9.25 inches, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket, looks close to new, 273 pages, b&w illustrations/photos, ---" Erik Jan Hanussen made a name for himself as Europe’s most audacious and controversial soothsayer. Billing himself as “The Man Who Knows All,” he performed in cabarets and music halls, attracting the attention of everyone from Sigmund Freud and Thomas Mann to Marlene Dietrich and Peter Lorre. His exceptional paranormal abilities–along with his stage specialty of hypnotizing women to orgasm–garnered ardent admirers and equally ardent denouncements, religious and otherwise. In March 1932, when Adolf Hitler’s political future seemed doomed, Hanussen predicted a resurgence of the Nazi Party. The prediction proved a psychic salve for Hitler, and Hanussen became an influential confidant of the superstitious fuhrer. But what Hitler didn’t know initially was that Hanussen was not the Dane he claimed to be but a Jew from Moravia whose given name was Herschel Steinschneider ."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------hardcover, about 7.5w x 9.75h inches, a Near Fine copy, in a Near Fine dustjacket with a wee bit of sunning to the spine, 355 pages, 50 ( FIFTY ) colour illustrations (many are full page ) plus numerous b&w and also includes facsimilie reproductions of the wood engravings from the 1877 edition, ---"Before The Lord of the Rings there was THE MABINOGION. Widely recognized as the finest arc of Celtic mythology, the eleven stories were preserved in two Welsh collections, The White Book of Rhydderch (c.1300-1325) and The Red Book of Hergest (1375-1425), though the stories themselves hail from an oral tradition dating back to the tenth century. At its core are tales of heroes and men, birth and death, gods and beasts, penance and vindication, kinship and kingship, battles and quests. THE MABINOGION embraces much of ancient and early British culture, combining the numinous world of Celtic mythology, Arthurian legend and feudal Europe’s Age of Chivalry. Indeed, scholars have identified that it was out of THE MABINOGION that the Arthurian legends were born. This new edition contains the definitive translation of the work by Lady Charlotte Guest, undoubtably the most accessible of those published, and includes the tale of Taliesin, which has been missing from the collected tales of the Mabinogion for over twenty years. It also contains 50 colour paintings by Alan Lee, many appearing here for the first time. Best known for his work on the illustrated editions of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, it was always Alan Lee’s ambition to illustrate THE MABINOGION, as it combines his main interests of folklore, legend and the supernatural. His style lends itself perfectly to the work and his interpretation will give enormous pleasure as the stories enter their third millennium"---, ---this contains: Introduction --- THE FOUR BRANCHES of the MABINOGI - Pwyll Prince of Dyved; Branwen the Daughter of Llyr; Manawyddan the Son of Llyr; Math the Son of Mathonwy --- THE FIVE INDEPENDENT NATIVE TALES - The Dream of Maxen Wledig; The Story of Lludd and Llevelys; Kilhwch and Olwen; The Dream of Rhonabwy; Taliesin ---THE THREE ROMANCES - The Lady of the Fountain; Peredur the Son of Evrawc; Geraint the Son of Erbin, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo
