-----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket, 546 pages, colour photos, ---"Peter Ackroyd's method is to position Shakespeare in the close context of his world. In this way, Ackroyd not only richly conjures up the texture of Shakespeare's life, but also imparts an amazing amount of vivid, interesting material about place, period and background. The book is packed with gems - and the reader turns the pages eagerly, keen to absorb the next nugget of information. Some snippets: Shakespeare was secretly a Roman Catholic; he wrote many more plays but these have been lost; the witches in Macbeth were not hags but women fairies or nymphs played by boys; the 'best' bed was for guests which was why he bequeathed his wife his 'second best' bed (the matrimonial bed in which he probably died); 'ham acting' derives from the strutting walk which showed off the ham-strings; an actor called 'Will' played female parts - could it have been Shakespeare himself?; and the strongest bond in the plays is between father and daughter perhaps reflecting Shakespeare's own family life."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

------------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a near Fine dustjacket, signed by Nazanin Afshin-Jam, 289 pages, ---"The remarkable story of two women named Nazanin-one a Canadian at the height of her career, the other a teenager on death row in Iran-and how one email changed their lives forever ---Nazanin Afshin-Jam was on top of the world. In 2006, she had just signed her first record deal and, after placing as first runner-up for Miss World, was a sought-after fashion model and icon within the Iranian dissident community. But one afternoon, she received an email that would change the course of her life. The subject of that email-a Kurdish girl named Nazanin Fatehi-was facing execution in Iran, as punishment for stabbing a man who had tried to rape her. Afshin-Jam quickly came to Fatehi's defence, striding into the world of international diplomacy and confronting the dark side of the country of her birth, with its honour killings, violence against women and state-sanctioned executions of children. While Fatehi languished in prison, experiencing conditions so deplorable she attempted to end her own life, Afshin-Jam worked desperately on the campaign to save her.The Tale of Two Nazanins weaves together the lives of two women-one leading a life of opportunity, the other living in abject poverty-and a fight for justice that, if only for a moment, brought the Iranian regime to its knees. An inspiring story about the bonds of sisterhood, this extraordinary book speaks to the power of every individual to foster positive change in the world."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

In the telling, Archambeau takes readers into places they would not otherwise know about, where the experience of Black people has transformed, and ultimately enriched, North American life from the last days of the Golden Age of North American railways, to the jazz clubs of Montreal, through the growth of civil aviation and those who work in the industry, to the personal trials and family challenges in times of cultural and social change. A reader finds humour and irony, as well as important social history, on every page of this true-life story."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket, looks close to new, 356 pages, --- In 1976, Nahlah Ayed’s family gave up their comfortable life in Winnipeg for the squalor of a Palestinian refugee camp in Amman, Jordan. The transition was jarring, but it was from this uncomfortable situation that Ayed first observed the people whose heritage she shared. The family returned to Canada when she was thirteen, and Ayed ignored the Middle East for many years. But the First Gulf War and the events of 9/11 reignited her interest. Soon she was reporting from the region full-time, trying to make sense of the wars and upheavals that have affected its people and sent so many of them seeking a better life elsewhere. ---In A Thousand Farewells, Ayed describes with sympathy and insight the myriad ways in which the Arab people have fought against oppression and loss as seen from her own early days witnessing protests in Amman, and the wars, crackdowns, and uprisings she has reported on in countries across the region. ---This is the heartfelt and personal chronicle of a journalist who has devoted much of her career to covering one of the world’s most vexing regions. , any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------hardcover, about 7.25w x 10.25h inches, a Near Fine copy, in a Near Fine dustjacket, looks new, 206 pages, b&w photos, ---"In spite of the fact that he designed 145 courses over a 30-year period, not many golfers outside of Canada know who Stanley Thompson was. They may have heard of Banff, Jasper Park Lodge, St. George's, and Highland Links because these are four of the greatest golf courses in the world. But it's doubtful that they know who designed them. It was Stanley Thompson. In 1928, legendary golf architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie - designer of Cypress Point, Augusta National, Royal Melbourne and Crystal Downs, among others - said that the golf course at Jasper Park Lodge was the best he'd ever seen. Robert Trent Jones, Sr. got his start with Thompson in 1930, and went on to become perhaps the greatest course designer ever. He said Thompson was one of the giants of his profession. Everyone who knew him said he was larger than life. He loved cigars, 15-ounce steaks, and whiskey. He is said to have made three separate fortunes and lost each one. He liked to wear fedoras and three-piece suits with a watch chain hooked into his vest pockets. Under his arm he would carry a briefcase, in his hand a cane. While building a course in Minnesota in 1951, a newspaper reporter described him as 'a fabulous little gentleman with a red face and spike-pointed cane seat'. He and his brothers were also some of the best golfers that Canada has ever known. Barclay's biography of Stanley Thompson is a tribute to one of golf's all-time great architects and great characters"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket, signed without inscription by Bates, small ink initials on front blank endpaper, 296 pages, ---"In the tradition of The Concubine's Children and Paper Shadows, a probing memoir from the author of the acclaimed novel Midnight at the Dragon Cafe. An elegant and surprising book about a Chinese family's difficult arrival in Canada, and a daughter's search to understand remarkable and terrible truths about her parents' past lives. Growing up in her father's hand laundry in small town Ontario, Judy Fong Bates listened to stories of her parents' past lives in China, a place far removed from their every-day life of poverty and misery. But in spite of the allure of these stories, Fong Bates longed to be a Canadian girl. Fifty years later she finally followed her curiosity back to her ancestral home in China for a reunion that spiralled into a series of unanticipated discoveries. Opening with a shock as moving as the one that powers The Glass Castle, The Year of Finding Memory explores a particular, yet universal, world of family secrets, love, loss, courage and shame. This is a memoir of a daughter's emotional journey, and her painful acceptance of conflicting truths. In telling the story of her parents, Fong Bates is telling the story of how she came to know them, of finding memory. ----------softcover, about 7 x 9.75 inches, a Very Good+ copy with a bit of rubbing to the edges and corners, 143 pages, charming colour and b&w illustrations and sketches throughout, ---"John Betjeman's verse autobiography has sold more copies than any other English poem of its length this century. The touching story of a boy's growth to early manhood and the mixed joys and guilt of youth, it is also supremely a poem about places, buildings and surroundings - Highgate and Pooterland, t Cornish seaside and Chelsea, Marlborough among its Downs, the quads of Oxford, parish churches and tin advertisements on railway platforms. Who better to illustrate this autobiography than Hugh Casson, architect and former President of the Royal Academy, who has already delighted us with illustrated books on London, Cambridge and Oxford which show him to be as much in love with those places as Betjeman himself. Casson is Beqemz very near contemporary and was a close friend, matching him in passion for all matters architectural and like him a keen observer of the splendid and ridiculous. He has delighted in Summoned by Bells since it first appeared and his illustrations in line and water-colour are a perfect complement to the verse"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

So it was for Dave Bidini in 1974, the last year Dave Keon played in Toronto. In a new grade in a new school, Bidini found himself the victim of a bully—a depredation he could understand only by thinking about what the Leafs dauntless captain went through game after game. Throughout his twenty-two-year career, Keon was only in one hockey fight, in his last game as a Leaf on April 22, 1974. It was on this day that the eleven-year-old Bidini decided to fight back, an occasion that the writer looks back on with breathtaking courage and honesty. But while Bidini would remain a blue-blooded Leafs fan into adulthood, Keon became estranged from the franchise with which he’d won four Stanley Cups, two Lady Byngs, and the first ever Conn Smythe Trophy in 1967. Told in two narratives—one from the point of view of the young Bidini growing up in Toronto in the early 70s and one from the perspective of the man looking for his absent hero—Keon and Me tells not only the story of a hockey icon who has haunted Toronto for decades, but of a life lived in parallel to Keon’s. It’s the story of cultural change, an account of the tribulations of the NHL’s most beloved (and most despised) franchise in the decades since Keon left under a cloud, and most of all, it is a story of growing up, with all the wisdom and sadness that imparts. Part ode to a legendary hockey player, part memoir, Keon and Me captures what we all cherish in the game we love and the importance of the innocence we cling to long after the cheers have faded.
