-----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine lightly rubbed dustjacket, a bit of age toning to paper, 379 pages, b&w photos, ---"With his sharp eye and analytical mind, Clive Ponting explodes many of the romantic myths which grew up in the years following the Crimean War, while telling the true story of the heroism of ordinary men. Above all, he makes use of the testimony of eyewitness accounts, from William Russell of The Times, the first war correspondent, to Leo Tolstoy, who was caught up in the action while visiting his brother, to the memories of a variety of serving soldiers. --The Crimean War is full of resonance - not least, the Charge of the Light Brigade, the Siege of Sevastopol and Florence Nightingale at Scutari with her lamp. In this fascinating book, Clive Ponting separates the myths from the reality, and tells the true story of the heroism of the ordinary soldiers, often through eye-witness accounts of the men who fought and those who survived the terrible winter of 1854-55. --To contemporaries, it was 'The Great War with Russia' - fought not only in the Black Sea and the Crimea but in the Baltic, the Arctic, the Pacific and the Caucasus. Ironically, Britain's allies were France, her traditional enemy, ably commanded (from home) by Napoleon III himself, and the Muslim Ottoman Empire, widely seen as an infidel corrupt power. It was the first of the 'modern' wars, using rifles, artillery, trench systems, steam battleships, telegraph and railways; yet the British soldiers wore their old highly coloured uniforms and took part in their last cavalry charge in Europe. There were over 650,000 casualties. --Britain was unable fully to deploy her greatest strength, her Navy, while her Army was led by incompetent aristocrats. The views of ordinary soldiers about Raglan, Cardigan and Lucan make painful reading."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

----------hard cover, a Near Fine copy in a Very Good+ dustjacket with just a wee bit of very light wear, very short closed tear on rear panel, 379 pages, b&w illustrations, ---"On 2nd April, 1801, the Royal Navy anchored a few hundred yards off the Copenhagen waterfront and engaged the Danes in a brief but bloody battle. Earlier, inspired by Paul I of Russia, the northern powers had begun to form an armed coalition which could have become a serious threat to British interest; the arrival of a British fleet in the Baltic and the subsequent defeat of the Danes was in answer to that perceived threat. To Nelson, the battle of Copenhagen was more than a great gamble: it was unnecessary. He had believed in a direct attack on the Russian fleet, but, failing that, he convinced Sir Hyde Parker, to whom he was second-in-command, that the best initial step would be an attack on the Danish fleet at Copenhagen. This he was allowed to lead. Dudley Pope looks at what miscalculations, what stupidities, what order of politics combined to put Nelson second-in-command to a man over sixty, a man with no real knowledge of naval warfare, a man who, at the height of battle, when the Royal Navy so obviously had the upper hand, hoisted the signal for Nelson to retreat. Nelson famously disregarded the order for, as he said, he had a right to be sometimes blind, being sightless in one eye. But The Great Gamble is much more than a full-blooded account of one of the greatest sea battles of all time. With his scrupulous eye for detail and unlimited access to both British and Danish sources, Pope throws such fascinating light on the background, the intrigues and the ramifications of the battle that the work can be read as a political, diplomatic, naval and social history of the early years of the Napoleonic wars."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

---------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket, 320 pages, b&w photos and illustrations, ---"Roving from the parched wadis of the Middle East, to an isolated farmhouse in rural Quebec, to the crowed boutiques of Beverly Hills, master storyteller and award-winning writer John Lawrence Reynolds explores the most notorious secret societies in history, probing their origins and activities, and revealing secrets maintained and distorted over hundred of years. --Reynolds peels away the layers of speculation, paranoia and fear, and shines a brilliant light on individuals and organizations that have generated suspicion and terror over several centuries. He treats the reader to a behind-the-scenes look at rituals and initiations, artifacts and secret signs, influences and dangers. And in the telling, he uncovers a rogue?s gallery of assassins, con artists, thieves, racists, drug smugglers, adulterers, pranksters and crooks. --But where does the truth lie? Does global power actually control the election of world leaders? Has an ancient mystical religion really been reduced to a length of red string selling for a dollar an inch? Are some secret societies little more than a group of boys playing at secret handshakes? From the Assassins to the Yakuza, from Freemasons to Bonesmen, shadow people and their secrets have flourished throughout history. Some fear them, some dismiss them, but everyone is fascinated by them. Secret societies fuel our imagination, and their shadows continue to fall across our daily lives. --explores the truth behind the hushed mysteries of history`s notorious secret societies. From the Skull and Bones to the Casa Nostra to the mysterious Druids, bestselling author John Lawrence Reynolds takes the reader on a guided tour of history`s most infamous secret societies. Explores the unique characters, events, and influences of the best known, and often least understood, secret societies. He offers stunning new revelations about their origins, their creators, and their activities. --Secret societies have flourished throughout history, capturing the public`s imagination and generating fear, suspicion, and above all fascination. The popularity of novels like The Da Vinci Code and The Rule of Four are a testament to our fascination with them. Reynolds treats the reader to a comprehensive, behind-the-scenes look at the origins and history, rituals and initiations, artifacts and secret signs, and languages and famous members of the most notorious secret societies of all time."---, ---chapters include: Introduction - Fools, Fears and fanatics; The Assassins; Templars, Illuminati and Freemasons; Priory of Sign -Keepwers of the Holy Grail; Druids and Gnostics; Kabbalah -Origins of the Apocalypse; Rosicrucians -The Pursuit of Esoteric Wisdom; Triads - Cultural Criminals; The Mafia and Cosa Nostra; Yakuza; Wicca -The Great Goddess and the Horned God; Skull and Bones -America's Secret Establishment; Secret Societies in Popular Culture; Critics, Alarmists and Conspiracy Theorists; Afterword - Of Demons and Baloney, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

Mr Scott describes the historical development of the geisha, the social background which surrounds her, her training and accomplishments, her costume and hair style. He discusses the famous geishas of the past and the organization of the geisha system today, with special reference to postwar developments. Thus the reader is led to a proper understanding of this unique and highly accomplished social class which has no counterpart in the West."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------softcover, about 5 x 7.75 inches, a Near Fine copy, looks new, 123 pages, b&w photos and illustrations, ---"A fabulous slice of wartime nostalgia, a facsimile edition of the manual used by the Land Girls during the Second World War. With millions of men away to fight in the Second World War Britain was struggling for labour. In order to replace the agricultural workers now fighting the Nazis, the Women's Land Army (originally founded in the First World War) was relaunched in June 1939 by the Ministry of Labour. The majority of the Land Girls already lived in the countryside but more than a third came from London and the industrial cities of the north of England. By the end of the war over 100,000 women of the WLA or 'Land Girls' as they were more affectionately known, had helped feed the nation in its darkest hour. First published in 1941, LAND GIRL was a practical guide for the city slickers who were recruited into the Women's Land Army and sent to work on farms in the English countryside to replace the men who had joined up. An amazing period piece, hundreds of thousands of copies were printed and sold and it became one of the year's best selling books"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------softcover, about 5 x 8 inches, a Near Fine copy, likely unread, interior is produced in facsimile to the original 19th century edition, 416 pages, b&w illustrations, ---This is the astonishing tale of Slatin Pasha (1857 - 1932), the Austrian soldier of fortune. Born near Vienna, the young Slatin had already fought in Bosnia when he was offered a high-ranking military post in the Sudan. This desert kingdom was ruled on behalf of the nearby Egyptian government by General Charles Gordon, the brilliant British soldier turned administrator. With a slim hold on power, Gordon was in need of strong, brave, linguistically talented, young men like Rudolf Slatin. If Slatin was looking for adventure as he rode his camel into Sudan's Darfur province in 1881 he got it in spades when one of the most spectacular wars of the 19th century broke out. Under the leadership of their leader known as the Mahdi, a vast native army arose to throw off their Egyptian overlords and cast out its foreign governors. Slatin was captured and enslaved. Gordon was surrounded at his capital in Khartoum and beheaded. After escaping from brutal slavery, Slatin was awarded military honours by Queen Victoria and returned to the Sudan to assist the very people who had held him in captivity., any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo
