-----------hardcover, about 9.5w x 11h inches, a Near Fine example, in a Near Fine dustjacket, looks new, 144 pages, b&w photographs throughout, ---"1913 ---Jacques Henri Lartigue was only nineteen years old when he spent his first winter vacation in the Alps. Immediately captivated, he became a frequent visitor to the increasingly fashionable resorts of Chamonix, Megève, and Saint Moritz. The photographs that he took there are full of the adolescent wonderment that he was to maintain all his life. The exhilaration at being in the mountains and the awe inspired by the ethereal scenery of snowcapped summits are difficult to contain. Lartigue was overcome by the "dazzle of colorless light" that surrounded him: "I am in the negative of night!" he wrote in his journal at the time. ---The young photographer's joy was as fresh as it was lasting, reinforced by the inexhaustible pleasures of winter sports, which he discovered at the same time. He photographed all the fun and glamour of European high-society at play in the snow--intrepid sportsmen and women in action, displaying their athletic prowess at skiing, ice hockey, skating, curling, bobsleigh. --- His pictures propel us between sky and land: skaters twirl, skiers jump, fir trees sway. But the mountains also harbor more contemplative, personal moments: his honeymoon with his young wife Bibi at Chamonix; skiing through "silence as soft as down"; the quiet poetry of a winter landscape. ---Beautifully reproduced in duo-tone, this collection of winter photographs, the majority of which are published here for the first time, reiterate Lartigue's positon as one of the great masters of twentieth-century photography"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------hardcover, about 9.25 x 9.25 inches, a Fine copy in a Fine dustjacket, 384 pages, colour photos, ---"Modern Baroque Interiors deals with an extraordinary design trend - old buildings being restored in a bold collision of classic and modern. Baroque furniture - heavy curtains, chandeliers, winged chairs - is put in high-tech surroundings. Gold, silver, burgundy and black emphasise the essence of baroque with its sophisticated and luxurious nature. Ornaments and glitter dominate modern interiors. Purity and simplicity are combined with complexity and voluptuousness to create an astounding contrast. The return of the baroque style is triumphal and triumphant. This book shows 47 projects with outstanding baroque interiors from the last two years. Upmarket shops, hotels and restaurants dominate, including work by the likes of Philippe Starck, Greg Natale Design and the Felix Gordillo / Jose Maria Fernandez Mayo partnership"---, some of the locations for these spectacular designs include: Dolce and Gabbana Paris Boutique; Byblos Hotel Villa Amista; Bisazza Showroom Berlin; Neri Hotel; Gramercy park Hotel; Viceroy Palm Springs; Helsinki Club; Yoo Copemhagen; Nouveau Casino; Negro de Anglona; Petrus Restaurant, plus many more, ---text is in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian, overseas shipping (outside of Canada and the USA ) will require additional postage, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

Along with Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, and George Grosz, artist Christian Schad is central to any appreciation of this fascinating period in both art and history. Schad is a contradictory character. For all his icy-cool realism, Schad's mesmerizing paintings are characterized by an intense engagement with his models. While he is best known as a realist, he is also credited by the Dadaists as the inventor of abstract photograms, or "Schadographs." Published in conjunction with an exhbition at the Neue Galerie in New York, Christian Schad and the Neue Sachlichkeit includes over 140 full-color reproductions of Schad's paintings, drawings, woodcuts and "Schadographs"."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------hardcover, about 10.25 x 9.25 inches, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket, 160 pages, colour images throughout, ---Regarded as one of Canada's finest still life realist artists, Mary Pratt's luminescent paintings form the visual focus of Goose Lane Edition's Mary Pratt, a career retrospective that examines every aspect of this unique artist's creative journey. Featuring seventy-four full colour reproductions of Pratt's most renowned works and a complete chronology of her career, including an selected list of her solo and group exhibitions, the book is augmented with a series of essays by five acclaimed art critics, curators and essayists. ---In "Look, Here", Mireille Eagan deftly dissects Pratt's craft by examining the relationship between location, subject and technique in her work. Sarah Fillmore's "Vanitas" visits the artist at home, giving a firsthand account of how the simple pleasures found in the family kitchen served as the inspiration for some of Pratt's most revered pieces. "A Woman’s Life" by Sarah Milroy is a detailed discovery of how the women in Pratt's past defined her presence, and informed her future. Catharine M. Mastin studies the artist as a young woman in "Base, Place, Location and the Early Paintings", which traces the roots of her creative identity from the streets of Fredericton, New Brunswick to the shores of the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland. In "Bedevilling the Real", Ray Cronin argues that Pratt's evocative illusions defy characterization and redefine the relationship between realism and representation. ---Mary Pratt is published by Goose Lane Editions in conjunction with an exhibition of her art, organized by The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. The exhibit appeared in St. John's (May 2013-September 2013) and Halifax (September 2014-January 2015) before travelling to the Art Gallery of Windsor (September 2013-January 2014), the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario (January 2014-April 2014), and the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina (May-August 2014), any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

Sixteen varied sections discuss and display the finest and most important work of different artists, groups, schools and periods - including American Impressionism, The Ashcan School, Precisionism, American Scene Painting, Edward Hopper, Urban realism, Photorealism and Postmodern realism today - and provide convincing proof that the American realist legacy occupies an unparalleled position in the world art of the past one hundred years. In this important critical synthesis, Edward Lucie-Smith discusses the work of the pioneering masters of American realism, such as Thomas Etkins, Mary Cassatt, Charles Sheeler, Thomas Hart Benton, Georgia O'Keesse and Andrew Wyeth. He adds a major new dimension in his examination of the work of contemporary realist painters: those currently acknowledged as major figures today, such as Wayne Thiebaud and Leon Golub, but also those whose reputations and contribution have only fairly recently been fully appreciated, among them Isabel Bishop, Alice Neel and Fairfield Porter, as well as younger artists, such as Eric Fischl and Jeff Koons, who have achieved star status as practitioners of this innovative tradition. The book thus carries the story of American realism right up to the present moment, and shows how it continues to flourish in the United States today as strongly as it has in the past. A magnificent volume, with over one hundred colour plates, American Realism both celebrates and reveals the strengths of a great American legacy"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

----------hardcover, about 10 x 12.25 inches, a Near Fine example with ever so slightly bumped lower corners, in a Near Fine dustjacket, 223 pages, colour and b&w photos, ---"In recent decades, glass sculpture has entered American museum collection in unprecedented numbers. A new phenomenon, this reflects new attitudes: an understanding that art-making occurs in glass as suitable for inclusion in museum collections. In this lavishly illustrated volume, Martha Drexler Lynn takes the reader on a tour of glass sculpture in American museums. She covers 26 permanent collections across the U.S., including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Cleveland Museum of Art, Detroit Institute of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Her survey of these museums reveals their lively interest in glass as an artistic medium, despite an earlier modernist bias. Sculpture, Glass, and American Museums will appeal to collectors, museums, critics, and art historians. Covering the work of such artists as Christopher Wilmarth, Howard Ben Tre, Lynda Benglis, and Stanislav Libensky, Lynn paints a portrait of a medium that is rapidly becoming an indispensable component of contemporary museum collections. This publication was commissioned by the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

First published over twenty years ago, this revised, redesigned and updated edition of a classic bestseller includes new paintings that have come to light since the original discovery. Between 1828 and 1851 sisters Elizabeth, Charlotte, Catherine and Mary Anne Clifford and their aunts Charlotte Annne, Catherine Elizabeth and Rosamond accumulated a portfolio of over 300 exquisite watercolours of the wild flowers of Frampton and the surrounding area. The paintings are bold, exactly observed, and beautifully and skillfully executed. Although many of the flowers were sketched in the field, the watercolours were perfected at home and captioned in ink with the plant's Linnaean family as well as their common names. Richard Mabey describes not only the paintings and the family, but relates their work to the rich flora of the woodlands, grasslands, wetlands, gardens and fields of England in the mid-nineteenth century."--, overseas shipping (outside of Canada and the USA ) will require additional postage-, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

Sparse landscapes of Lake Superior's northern shores, bold visions of the Rocky Mountains and haunting landscapes from the Eastern Arctic are hallmark themes of Lawren Harris's paintings. He was a founding member of the renowned "Group of Seven" artists' group, who believed that the Canadian landscape was central to the foundation of a national identity. Focusing on Harris's most important work of the 1920s through the early 1930s, this monograph features a selection of major works that are as iconic in Canada as those of Georgia O'Keeffe and Edward Hopper in the U.S. His remarkable use of color, light, and composition resulted in powerful scenes that reflect his progress toward a universal vision of nature's spiritual power. Drawn from the Art Gallery of Ontario's substantial holdings as well as other public collections throughout Canada, this publication repositions Harris's work and establishes him as major figure within the wider context of 20th-century modern painting in the Americas."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------hardcover, about 10.5w x 10.5h inches, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket, looks new, colour and b&w photos and illustrations, 208 pages, ---"For more than 80 years, The Group of Seven has been Canada`s best-known art collective. Founded in 1920, the Group--Franklin Carmichael, Lawren S. Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Frank H. Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. MacDonald, Frederick H. Varley, A.J. Casson, Edwin Holgate, and Lionel LeMoine Fitzgerald-was recognized for their strikingly bold, modernist and colourful images of the Canadian landscape. In creating their art, the Group also contributed greatly to Canada`s emerging sense of identity. In their inaugural exhibition catalogue, the Group poignantly wrote: `An art must grow and flower in the land before the country will be a real home for its people.` In The Group of Seven in Western Canada, Catharine Mastin, curator of the Glenbow exhibition, along with five other Canadian scholars and curators explore the inspiration and influence of the west on both the Group`s artwork and their sense of national identity. The book focuses on the significant themes and works produced by the Group from artistic, political, geographical, social and cultural perspectives in order to create the first, and most comprehensive, study of the Group`s western muse. With 130 images and photographs to accompany the fascinating and insightful text, The Group of Seven in Western Canada is a unique and outstanding contribution to the history and legacy of Canadian art.
