------------5 volumes (ONE SHIPPING PRICE ), plus a CD, CD contains all the material found in The Collected Essays as well as the complete run of The Conservative, all 5 books are Very Fine in Very Fine dustjackets, volume 5 is in original shrinkwrap, all are unread, the CD is in original shrinkwrap, --JOURNALISM, 440 pages -Discovering the amateur press in 1914, Lovecraft immediately flooded the many small papers of his friends and colleagues with contributions discussing the nature, purpose, and future of amateur journalism. He also edited his own magazine, The Conservative (1915-23), filling it with additional essays. In these articles Lovecraft discusses the conflict between the United and the National Amateur Press Associations; the "halcyon days" of the amateur movement (1885-95); and the "needs and betterment" of the amateur cause. We read of Lovecraft's bitter feuds with his fellow amateurs; his exhaustive critiques of their writing; and, most poignant of all, his touching affirmation of "What Amateurdom and I Have Done for Each Other," in which he concludes simply: "What Amateur Journalism has given me is—life itself." --LITERARY, 280 pages - Lovecraft's writings in the realm of literary criticism are unfailingly acute and cover a surprisingly wide range. Besides his authoritative early essay on "The Literature of Rome" (1918), other works condemn free verse and simple spelling, and devote attention to neglected poets. Discovering weird fiction as his chosen field, he produced such scintillating essays as "Lord Dunsany and His Work" (1922) and "Supernatural Horror in Literature" (1927), along with essays on Frank Belknap Long and Clark Ashton Smith. Late in life Lovecraft codified his grasp of weird literature by writing such trenchant pieces as "Notes on Writing Weird Fiction" (1933) and "Some Notes on Interplanetary Fiction" (1934). One of his last writings, "Suggestions for a Reading Guide" (1936), is a comprehensive discussion of world literature --SCIENCE, 357 pages - A self-proclaimed "mechanistic materialist," Lovecraft took an unremittingly scientific view of reality. This perspective informed the whole of his literary output, but is nowhere so clearly seen as in this assemblage of his writings on science. Beginning with the scientific journals, treatises and astronomy columns of his early years, and continuing throughout his life, these writings illuminate Lovecraft's thought in a unique, and until now, largely unappreciated way. As a bonus, almost two-dozen of HPL's hand lettered star maps are reproduced. -- TRAVEL, 300 pages - Far from being a recluse, H. P. Lovecraft traveled widely -- ranging as far north as Quebec, as far south as Florida and Louisiana, and as far west as Ohio. He wrote interestingly and at length about these expeditions. Collected here are all HPL's formal travelogues, including "Vermont-A First Impression" (1927), "Observations on Several Parts of America" (1928), "Travels in the Provinces of America" (1929), and "An Account of a Visit to Charleston" (1930). Also included is A Description of the Town of Quebeck, in New France, Lately Added to His Britannick Majesty's Dominions, which, at 75,000 words, was Lovecraft's longest work. As a bonus, all of Lovecraft's hand-drawn maps and illustrations of the regions he visited are reproduced --PHILOSOPHY, 382 pages - In this fifth and final volume of Lovecraft’s Collected Essays will be found a rich vein of Lovecraft’s philosophical writings. A lifelong student of metaphysics, ethics, aesthetics, and other branches of philosophy, Lovecraft early declared himself a forthright materialist and atheist, and defended his views in numerous controversies with colleagues. Such essays as Idealism and Materialism A Reflection and the In Defence of Dagon essays outline the essentials of Lovecraft’s philosophical thought, including such issues as free will, the improbability of theism, and cosmic pessimism. In his later years the problems of politics and economics came to the forefront of his attention, and in the essays Some Repetitions on the Times, A Layman Looks at the Government, and the unpublished The Journal and the New Deal Lovecraft vigorously argues for a moderate socialism to relieve the widespread unemployment brought on by the Depression. The problem of art in the modern age also concerned Lovecraft, and in the unpublished essay Living Heritage: Roman Architecture in Today’s America Lovecraft condemns modern functionalist architecture as inherently ugly and the product of sterile theory. This volume also contains Lovecraft’s autobiographical essays, including the delightful A Confession of Unfaith telling of his shedding of religious belief, and the piquant -Cats and Dogs,- in which cats stand as sybols for the abstract beauty of a boundless cosmos. --All texts are extensively annotated, with critical and bibliographical notes, by S. T. Joshi ---CD - Our groundbreaking CD-ROM incorporates not only the text of the entire five volumes of H. P. Lovecraft's COLLECTED ESSAYS, with annotations, bibliographical citations, and introductions, but also the complete texts of Lovecraft's own journal The Conservative, plus actual scans of the entire run of the journal. This amazing archive is fully searchable, so scholars can readily locate and identify the most useful citations. For instance, searching "Boston" returns 224 instances spread through the five volumes of essays, plus four results in The Conservative. Results of searches are presented in a separate window, assembled in easy-to-read listings which link back to the source text. Many of Lovecraft's own illustrations and star maps are also incorporated in remarkable clarity, including some appearing in full color for the first time. Other unique features of this electronic edition include links between the essays and chronological and alphabetical listings of all of Lovecraft’s works. Whether the task is to locate a dim-remembered phrase from "A Descent to Avernus," or finding all of HPL's appearances in Dowdell's Bearcat, research was never easier! Comprising over a million words, with this handy, portable CD-ROM Lovecraftians need never lack suitable reading material again. CD-ROM designed and implemented by David E. Schultz, with the assistance of Donovan K. Loucks, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------softcover, a Near Fine copy, just a wee rub mark on the covers otherwise a Fine copy, a beautiful little book, ---A poem by H.P. Lovecraft regarding a holiday for the Feast of Saturn in ancient Rome which traditionally begins around December 15th - Beautiful bit of verse suitable for the holidays or any time of year and a very nice example of Howard Phillip Lovecraft's early poetry. Handset in Twentieth Century Modern printed on Domestic Etch paper. Original collagraph image, border embossments and wood engraving by Chad Pastotnik. Pamphlet stitched with full wrap Ingres Antique black covers letterpress printed. 4 pgs., 3 illustrations including title page and the two blind stamped images, 5 x 5 1/4 inches. produced in an edition of 70 books (not numbered). --A collagraph is an intaglio process of making a image via additive and subtractive layers of material on a base plate. In this case the plate is book board with layers of other cardboard, chipboard and other papers cut to shape, glued onto or chiseled out of the plate. The end result is then run through the intaglio press under tremendous pressure. The paper has been dampened for a determined amount of time to relax the cotton fibers and help it conform under the pressure and the plate and paper are placed under heavy felt blankets prior to making the impression. This process is similar to the relief process of using a male/female die for embossing but predates it - is far more hands on and certainly a slower method of making prints., any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo
