------------softcover, about 6 x 9 inches, a Near Fine copy, 274 pages, b&w photos, ---"From the mid-1830s to the 1860s, the missionaries sent to Minnesota by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) wrote thousands of letters to their supervisors and supporters claiming success in converting the Dakota people. But author Linda M. Clemmons reveals that the reality of the situation was far more conflicted than what those written records would suggest. In fact, in the rough Minnesota territory, missionaries often found themselves looking to the Dakota for support. The missionaries and their wives struggled to define what it meant to convert and "civilize" Dakota people. And, although many scholars depict missionaries as working hand in hand with the federal government, Clemmons reveals discord over the Dakota people's treatment, especially after the U.S.–Dakota War of 1862, when many missionaries spoke out against exile. The missionaries found that work with the Dakota was rarely as heroic, romantic, or successful as what they read about in the evangelical press, but, at the same time, they themselves painted a rosier picture of their own work"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo..

Many of the people of the Highlands and islands of Scotland were forced from their homes by landowners in the Clearances. Some fled to Nova Scotia and beyond. David Craig sets out to discover how many of their stories survive in the memories of their descendants. He travels through 21 islands in Scotland and Canada, many thousands of miles of moor and glen, and presents the words of men and women of both countries as they recount the suffering of their forbears."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket, maybe unread, 488 pages, b&w illustrrations, ---In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, between the reign of Louis XIII and the Revolution, the French nobility of the ancien regime turned their energies to developing the art of sociability, a refined code of manners, and an ideal of gallant, spirited conversation that became a model for social and intellectual life. --Benedetta Craveri’s history of this leisured, worldly society begins in the 1620s with the celebrated Blue Room of the Marquise de Rambouillet, one of the first in a long series of women who resided over conversations among nobles, writers, prelates, and diplomats. The women Craveri profiles played a significant part in the development of new literary forms such as the novel and the maxim, the codification of language, taste, and behavior, and debates over religion, philosophy, and science. Some, like Madame de Lafayette and Madame de Stael, were gifted writers themselves. Some were involved in the major events of their time, like the Grande Mademoiselle and the Duchesse de Longueville during the Fronde rebellion. Later, the Marquise de Lambert, Madame de Tencin, and Julie de Lespinasse opened their salons to intellectuals such as Fontenelle, Montesquieu, d’Alembert, and Diderot, thus helping to spread the ideas of the Enlightenment. --In demonstrating the diversity of these women’s accomplishments, Benedetta Craveri brings to life this brilliant, vanished culture that perfected the pleasure of living. In her pages, the world of La Rochefoucauld, Louis XIV, and Voltaire, of Jansenism, preciosity, Mlle de Scudery’s literary portraits, and Mme de Sevigne’s letters, appears in all its fascinating complexity. -----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine price clipped dustjacket, 485 pages, b&w photos, ---This portrait of Paris between 1900 and 1914, when it was the artistic centre of Europe, is evoked by a series of character sketches of important figures, such as Proust, Gide, Claudel, Debussy, Sarah Bernhardt, Picasso, Diaghilev and the Curies. By drawing together the threads of their lives the author distinguishes a subtlety and delicacy in artistic and intellectual life not present in the more pleasure-seeking 1890s. But dark political clouds were looming with the German occupation of Alsace-Lorraine, the Agadir crisis, and the effect on Germany of the growing Entente Cordiale - events of which intellectuals and artists failed to see the full significance., any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy but there is a bit of ink underlining and bracketing so a Very Good copy, in a Very Good dustjacket with a small nick at upper spine tip and a short closed tear on rear panel, 322 pages, b&w photos, ---"During the four decades following the War of 1812, Great Lakes Indians were forced to surrender most of their ancestral homelands and begin refashioning their lives on reservations. The challenges Indians faced during this period could not have been greater. By century's end, settlers, frontier developers, and federal bureaucrats possessed not only economic and political power but also the bulk of the region's resources. It is little wonder that policymakers in Washington and Ottawa alike anticipated the disappearance of distinctive Indian communities within a single generation. However, these predictions have proved false as Great Lakes Indian communities, though assaulted on both sides of the international border to this day, have survived. Danziger's lively and insightful book documents the story of these Great Lakes Indians—a study not of victimization but of how Aboriginal communities and their leaders have determined their own destinies and preserved core values, lands, and identities against all odds and despite ongoing marginalization. --Utilizing eyewitness accounts from the 1800s and an innovative, cross-national approach, Danziger explores not only how Native Americans adapted to their new circumstances—including attempts at horse and plow agriculture, the impact of reservation allotment, and the response to Christian evangelists—but also the ways in which the astute and resourceful Great Lakes chiefs, councils, and clan mothers fought to protect their homeland and preserve the identity of their people. Through their efforts, dreams of economic self-sufficiency and self-determination as well as the historic right to unimpeded border crossings -from one end of the Great Lakes basin to the other - were kept alive. ---Cover Photo of girls at Lac du Flambeau School courtesy Wisconsin Historical Society and photo of Ojibwa farm family at Garden River Reservation courtesy Archives of Ontario"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy, in a Very Good+ dustjacket with a crease on rear panel and rear flap, 316 pages, b&w photos, ---"A unique and highly personal history of Nazi Germany, supported throughout by documents and transcripts. In 1993 Martin Davidson discovered that his German grandfather, who seemingly spent the war as an unassuming dentist in Berlin, had been a Nazi. And a thoroughly committed one, too: he had joined the Bund as a child, graduated to the brownshirts, and signed up for the party as soon as it had become legal, seven years before Hitler came to power. Davidson became determined to discover who and what his grandfather had really been. This book is the story of that quest. It is the piecing together and fleshing out of an archetype on which the Nazi party was founded: the middle-ranking, cogwheel-oiling, in-tray-emptying, memo-writing, fanatical fascist. As Davidson trawls through the archive, discovering many revelatory documents, he comes closer and closer to a mind-reeling possibility. His grandfather had been in Hungary in 1944. Did his commitment to evil go as deep as working with Eichmann on the sending of 700,000 Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz? Davidson also investigates and considers the lives and careers of other members of his family, some of whom made very different choices. He asks, what does it mean to discover that so many of one's relatives operated on the wrong side of the greatest moral divide of modern times? And what light does that discovery shed on the inner workings not just of Nazi bureaucracy, but on the complex of emotions and calculations that drew millions of Germans to throw in their lot with an insane ideology of mass murder? -------------2 volumes (ONE SHIPPING PRICE ), hardcovers, both are Near Fine copies, this listing is for TWO BOOKS, ---the first is simply titled LEBENSRAUM and does not have any publisher information, date at the rear of the book is 1997, it is a Near Fine copy, no dustjacket as issued, about 12.5w x 7.5h inches, coil bound with clear plastic covers, this contains about 30 b&w images presented on heavy card stock, all of these images appear in the other volume (EXTERMINATION ) except for one image (which I suspect was not an image Westzone wanted to include), all the images are from the death camps mentioned in the other volume although there are no credited images from Chelmo (which are in the other volume), this volume has no publisher information and the only date is 1997 so this is likely a precursor to the 2001 edition by Westzone, ---the volume titled: Lebensraum, Extermination Camps of the Third Reich is about 11.25w x 7.75h inches, a Near Fine copy in a Very Good+ lightly rubbed dustjacket with a very short closed tear and a couple of small nicks, unpaginated but WorldCat states about 150 pages, about 90 b&w images, so a much more extensive offering than the earlier edition, afterword by Carroll, ---neither edition is common but the 1997 edition seems to be particularly scarce, ---the majority of the images in both books are for the most part common everyday objects without any real intonations of evil purposes, images like a cannister of ZYKLON B are obviously imbued with an elelment of menace but so are images of washing sinks, a staircase, the sole of a shoe, etc., a collection of b&w photos with a more than unsettling aura, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

------------hardcover, about 6.25 x 9.25 inches, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket, 530 pages, ---"This book examines how the idea of Pakistan was articulated and debated in the public sphere and how popular enthusiasm was generated for its successful achievement, especially in the crucial province of U.P. (now Uttar Pradesh) in the last decade of British colonial rule in India. It argues that Pakistan was not simply a vague idea that serendipitously emerged as a nation-state, but was popularly imagined as a sovereign Islamic State, a new Medina, as some called it. In this regard, it was envisaged as the harbinger of Islam’s renewal and rise in the twentieth century, the new leader and protector of the global community of Muslims, and a worthy successor to the defunct Turkish Caliphate. The book specifically foregrounds the critical role played by Deobandi ulama in articulating this imagined national community with an awareness of Pakistan’s global historical significance. It demonstrates how these ulama collaborated with the Muslim League leadership and forged a new political vocabulary fusing ideas of Islamic nationhood and modern state. It, therefore, challenges three principal strands in India’s Partition historiography: scholarship on elite politics that largely sees Pakistan’s emergence as the result of breakdown of constitutional negotiations between the British government, the leaders of the Muslim League and the Indian National Congress; subaltern histories that argue that Pakistan was a vague but emotive religious symbol that found overwhelming popular support without an awareness of its meaning or implications; and finally narratives which argue that Jinnah led a secular nationalist movement to create Pakistan as a liberal democratic State. Di Cintio shares tea with Saharan refugees on the wrong side of Morocco’s desert wall. He meets with illegal Punjabi migrants who have circumvented the fencing around the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. He visits fenced-in villages in northeast India, walks Arizona’s migrant trails, and travels to Palestinian villages to witness the protests against Israel’s security barrier. From Native American reservations on the US-Mexico border and the “Great Wall of Montreal” to Cyprus’s divided capital and the Peace Lines of Belfast, Di Cintio seeks to understand what these structures say about those who build them and how they influence the cultures that they surround. Some walls define us from them with medieval clarity. Some walls encourage fear or feed hate. Others kill. And every wall inspires its own subversion, whether by the infiltrators who dare to go over, under or around them, or by the artists who transform them"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo
