---------large (oblong quarto) hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine lightly rubbed dustjacket, signed by Berton on a tipped-in plate which seems to be common to this book, 223 pages, packed with colour and b&w photos, ---"Nations are built from the relationship between a country's unique physical features and the people who live in and around them. Canada is a most spectacular example of such a glorious marriage. In this sweeping look at the country he knows so well, Pierre Berton has compiled the stories of twenty-five people who have shaped our history or been shaped and influenced by the geography they found themselves contending with. He sees genius and madness in characters from all parts of the country: from Maquinna, the emperor of the rainforest who battled fellow chieftains and European invaders alike, to Robert Service, who loathed the poem that made him rich, to Mina Hubbard, the widow who raced across Labrador in long skirts to carry out her late husband's dream. Pierre Berton's Canada visits every region, adding daubs of color to our vast map. And the stunning photos that fill the book complement the stories, and explain the hardships and joys that motivated Berton's cast of characters."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

Pierre Berton's #1 best-selling book brings to life the great explorers: the pious and ambitious Edward Parry, the flawed hero John Franklin, ruthless Robert Peary and the cool Norwegian Roald Amundsen. He also credits the Inuit, whose tracking and hunting skills saved the lives of the adventurers and their men countless times. These quests are peopled with remarkable figures full of passion and eccentricity. They include Charles Hall, an obscure printer who abandoned family and business to head to a frozen world of which he knew nothing; John Ross, whose naval career ended when he spotted a range of mountains that didn't exist; Frederick Cook, who faked reaching the North Pole; and Jane Franklin, who forced an expensive search for her missing husband upon a reluctant British government. Pierre Berton, who won his first Governor General's award for The Mysterious North, here again gives us an important and fascinating history that reads like a novel as he examines the historic events of the golden age of Arctic exploration."-----, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

------------softcover, about 6 x 9 inches, a Near Fine copy, 458 pages, b&w as well as some colour illustrations, ---"examines the fascinating history of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s involvement in scientific networks during the company’s two-hundred year chartered monopoly. Working from the company’s voluminous records, Ted Binnema demonstrates the significance of science in the company’s corporate strategies. Initially highly secretive about all of its activities, the HBC was by 1870 an exceptionally generous patron of science. Aware of the ways that a commitment to scientific research could burnish its corporate reputation, the company participated in intricate symbiotic networks that linked the HBC as a corporation with individuals and scientific organizations in England, Scotland, and the United States. The pursuit of scientific knowledge could bring wealth and influence, along with tribute, fame, and renown, but science also brought less tangible benefits: adventure, health, happiness, male companionship, self-improvement, or a sense of meaning. The first study of scientific research in any chartered company over the entire course of its monopoly, Enlightened Zeal expands our understanding of social networks in science, establishes the vast scope of the HBC’s contribution to public knowledge, and will inspire new research into the history of science in other chartered monopolies. ------------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket, looks new, 256 pages, ---"This is the biography of an idea, and the remarkable story of the man who created -and then convinced the world to adopt -a unified standard for telling time. Today we take the accurate telling of time across the world for granted. Yet little more than a hundred years ago, people even in neighbouring towns lived by different time schedules: noon was simply whenever the sun happened to be overhead -Toronto time, for example, was different from Hamilton time some forty miles away. None of this mattered when people travelled in the slow style that had been the norm for generations. But then, as Clark Blaise makes vividly clear, trains arrived -and in the new age of communications myriad local times became a mind-boggling obstacle, and the rational ordering of time an urgent priority. Sandford Fleming, a young emigrant from Scotland, performed the remarkable task of solving the unfathomable temporal riddle of how to knit together a world stippled with thousands of local times. That invention was the start of an exhausting campaign to persuade the squabbling international powers, the diplomats and scientists, to adopt a unified time system -a campaign that came to a dramatic conclusion at the Prime Meridian Conference in 1884. His achievement turned out to be one of the greatest gifts of the Victorian Age to our global modern world. This was the great "Decade of Time," as Blaise calls it, that extraordinary ten years that also saw the invention of electric light, the telephone, Impressionism and high-speed cameras. Time Lord is an absorbing reflection on the mythic origins of time itself, as well as a meditation on science, psychiatry, art and literature (from Dickens to Sherlock Holmes to Hemingway); the roots of depression and anxiety; and the results of one man's fascination with clocks and watches and railway schedules. At the heart of the story is the mild but fierce-minded communications genius who sketched and surveyed his way from coast to coast, oversaw the building of the great Canadian railroad, designed the first Beaver stamp, and invented the world-circling, sub-Pacific cable; who saw the world as a whole and changed its nature forever."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket, 258 pages, colour photos, an unbelievable and yet factual recounting of the Native occupation of the Douglas Creek Estates in Caledonia, Ontario and how the OPP ( Ontario Provincial Police ) refused to take action against native protestors who committed crimes literally in front of OPP officers watching from less than 50 feet away at times, Caledonia residents were ultimately abandoned and living in fear as they never knew what would be next already having had gutted deer hanging from telephone poles in front of their homes, having to apply and show Six Nations produced passports just so they could get to their own homes, being threatened that a house that was for sale could "just be taken by the natives", etc, etc, etc., a truly unbelievable story that still is ongoing 5 years later and yet during the height of the activity around DCE the majority of news and media outlets reported very little or nothing about the entire espiode except for the highlights and photo-ops, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

This book details the events leading up to the insurrection in the prosperous farming area that later became the County of Oxford, particularly Norwich and Dereham Townships. Life at the time of the rebellion must have been exciting for those of an adventurous nature, but very insecure for a great many others. The fortunes and misfortunes of the inhabitants are described as the author attempts to define what caused these men to rebel in the first place."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------softcover, about 6w x 9h inches, a Near Fine example, pencil name on front endpaper, 271 pages, b&w photos and illustrations, ---"What Great Lake was the hunting ground of a twentieth century pirate? ---Where did Canada’s "King of the Bootleggers" end his days? ---Who was the only man Al Capone ever truly feared? ---Since the earliest colonial times, the Great Lakes have been a smugglers’ highway. Together with the Upper St. Lawrence River, the Lakes have borne silent witness to trafficking of almost every commodity governments could tax or ban. Smugglers kept commerce alive in Canada in the early nineteenth century, contributed to the British-Canadian victory in the War of 1812, and carried escaped slaves to freedom in Canada in the decades before the American Civil War. They also corrupted government officials, terrorized honest citizens and committed acts of ruthless violence. ---A French bootlegger founded the city of Detroit in the eighteenth century. Two hundred years later, American and Canadian bootleggers supplied booze to the criminal empires of Al Capone, Dion O’Banion and the Purple Gang during the doomed experiment called Prohibition. Some became rich; others died with their boots on. Some were cut down by Coast Guard bullets; more were gunned down by rival bootleggers. All of them were brazen and ingenious (Rocco Perri had a front as a macaroni salesman) and they stopped at nothing. Whether they operated in defiance of unjust laws or out of pure greed, the smugglers and bootleggers of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River carved a legacy of violence and adventure, one that has had a profound impact upon the histories of Canada and the United States"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a lightly rubbed near Fine dustjacket, signed without inscription by both authors, gift inscription, 319 pages, b&w photos, ---"In 1793 Lieutenant - Governor John Graves Simcoe ordered a road cut through the wilderness of Upper Canada - a military link westward from Lake Ontario and a spur to settlement. It was called 'The Governor's Road', partly in derision, for its path was narrow and winding, beset with stones and stumps. But the settlers did come; they and their buildings are the subject of this book. The road became the spinal cord of southwestern Ontario. The authors follow it through Oakville, Dundas, and Ancaster and on to London, with stops in Waterdown, Brantford, St. George, Paris, and Woodstock. The homes range from cottages to castles, their materials from frame and cobblestone to red brick and cut stone. (this book) will attract anyone interested in regional history and the early days of Ontario and anyone whose roots lie in southern Ontario."---, ---contents include: Introduction; Along Dundas Street through Mississauga; Oakville; Trafalgar Village to Waterdown; Dundas; Ancaster; Brantford and Mount Pleasamt; St George to Thamesford; Paris; Woodstock; London, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo
