It was a legendary time there, when the likes of Pierre Berton, Robert Fulford, June Callwood, Peter Gzowski, and Peter C. Newman graced the magazine's pages. McCall would come to join that illustrious group, and be considered not only one of the best political writers of her generation, but a pioneer for women in journalism and one of Canada's most brilliant minds. For the first time, the best of McCall's articles and essays have been collected in one definitive volume alongside excerpts from her unfinished memoirs. Covering topics from the Alberta oil boom to the rise of divorce rates in Canada to in-depth profiles of the Ottawa establishment, McCall's clear-eyed observations are not only laced with insight, humour, and compassion, they continue to be relevant today"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a visually Near Fine but there is a short closed tear so a Very Good+ dustjacket, jacket is now in a hi-quality mylar protector, 472 pages, b&w photos and illustrations, ---"Two portraits flank the doors leading into Canada’s House of Commons: Sir Robert Borden to the left and W.L.M. King to the right. While each man appears flatteringly stern, wise, and charismatic, it is the portrait plaques that are of particular interest. Borden's caption reads: -World War I War Leader, 1914-1918,- while King’s caption is similar: -World War II War Leader, 1939-945.- No other dates are given. --Perhaps that definition makes sense for Borden, who did little of note before the war; it does not ring true for King, Canada’s longest serving prime minister. Yet in both cases world wars shaped their careers and legacies. They ushered in massive government changes: income tax, health care, and conscription; changes to society through industrialization, enfranchisement, and patriotic unpaid labour; and they raised enormous armed forces from a civilian base. --Warlords is a fast-paced narrative that humanizes the war effort through the eyes of the prime ministers. Set against how our senior politicians governed themselves and the nation during these difficult times, it offers an invaluable perspective of war and war leaders."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

Sheila Copps", laid into this copy is a colour photo of Ms Copps (about 4 x 5 inches), 212 pages, ---"Born into a political family, the daughter of a popular Hamilton mayor, Sheila Copps was destined for a life in politics. After graduating in English and French, she became a journalist with the Ottawa Citizen and the Hamilton Spectator. A spell behind the scenes with the provincial Liberals led to her election to the Ontario legislature in 1981 but she reached her true home in the House of Commons in 1984, where she has been re-elected ever since. In opposition she made her name as a member of the “Rat Pack” that harassed Brian Mulroney’s government, and was a loyal supporter of John Turner. In turn, she was a loyal member of Jean Chrétien’s government, a member of his Cabinet from 1993 on, with posts that ranged from Deputy Prime Minister to Minister of the Environment to Minister of Communications and, latterly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. In 2003 she ran for Prime Minister and lost. --In 2004, against all Liberal party tradition, she was squeezed out of her Hamilton seat in a famously controversial nomination fight. As a result, because she feels that Paul Martin and his team of insiders have broken the code of fair treatment, she is writing this book to shine light in dark places. --The key to this book’s success is that Sheila Copps has been at the centre of power throughout all the days of Paul Martin’s time at Finance and knows which cupboards hide skeletons. A left-wing Liberal, she believes that there are secrets from Paul Martin’s past that should be revealed, and now – in her own voice with no ghost writer involved – this former journalist is ready to reveal them. As a result, the book will be embargoed – with no excerpts – until its revelations hit the front pages."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

For David Creighton, her voyage still continues. ---In Losing the Empress, Creighton delves into the lives of his grandparents - Salvation Army officers who were lost on the Empress - and the lives of their five orphaned children who would soon be plunged into World War I. His discoveries reveal amazing details about the Empress, which sank in fourteen minutes with a greater loss of life than the Titanic disaster. ---Shipwreck nostalgia, last voyage dinners, Salvationists, the British Empire and the world wars fought to preserve it; everything comes into focus when the author joins Titanic discoverer Robert Ballard on a film shoot at the sunken liner''s site. Losing the Empress lyrically traces a personal journey into the past and into the future."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

Written by her protege and fellow folklorist, Clary Croft, this intimate biography offers both an intriguing portrait of a woman whose life was destined to become woven into the fabric of Canadian folklore, and a fascinating glimpse into the social mores of her time. Painstakingly researched, with excerpts from Dr. Creighton's personal diaries and correspondence, this book reveals the complexities of a woman whose life's work brought her fame, respect and sometimes censure"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

----------trade paperback, about 6 x 9 inches, a Near Fine copy, 248 pages, b&w photos, ---"The events at Oka in 1990 saw the might of the Canadian Armed Forces in the service of the governments of both Quebec and Canada confront some 40 armed Mohawk "Warriors" who were defending their local community's resistance against a further colonial encroachment on their native lands. The events of that summer have etched themselves indelibly into the minds of North Americans as the latest episode in the continuing 500-year history of "Indian wars" in the Americas. --To the Mohawk nation, a community spanning a territory crossed by the Canada-USA boundary, the confrontation at Oka was simply a temporary open declaration of war by Canada in what Mohawks regard as an ongoing cold war between their nation, and the colonial powers of both Canada and the USA. As in all previous "Indian wars" instantly mythologized by the colonial North American media, the defenders of the community at Oka were presented to North American news consumers as "a criminal element," terrorizing (with their "Viet Nam military training" and their "Mafia connections") not only "law abiding citizens," but their own people as well. --The day after the military stand-off at Oka ended, "Lasagna," one of the leaders of the Mohawks' armed resistance, was "unmasked" as Ronald Cross-a man with no criminal record, no connections to the Mafia or any other "criminal underground," and no military service record in Viet Nam or any other country in the world. Where, then, had these "common knowledge" rumours originated? And why was there such a high degree of media complicity in the "public information strategies" of the governments of Quebec, Canada and the USA? Where, indeed, did the inflammatory media tag "Warriors" come from, when the closest word in the Mohawk language defining such a concept means, simply and literally, "the men of the community"?
