-----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket, looks new, ribbon marker as issued, 1336 pages, ---"Humanist, skeptic, acute observer of himself and others, Michel de Montaigne (1533- 1592) was the first to use the term -essay- to refer to the form he pioneered, and he has remained one of its most famous practitioners. He reflected on the great themes of existence in his wise and engaging writings, his subjects ranging from proper conversation and good reading, to the raising of children and the endurance of pain, from solitude, destiny, time, and custom, to truth, consciousness, and death. Having stood the test of time, his essays continue to influence writers nearly five hundred years later. Also included in this complete edition of his works are Montaigne’s letters and his travel journal, fascinating records of the experiences and contemplations that would shape and infuse his essays. Montaigne speaks to us always in a personal voice in which his virtues of tolerance, moderation, and understanding are dazzlingly manifest. Donald M. Frame’s masterful translation is widely acknowledged to be the classic English version"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a lightly rubbed Very Good+ dustjacket, 248 pages, ---"In this imaginative exploration of modern legal culture, Lawrence Friedman addresses how the contemporary idea of individual rights has altered the legal systems and authority structures of Western societies. Every aspect of law, he argues--from civil rights to personal-injury litigation to divorce law--has been profoundly reshaped, reflecting the power of this concept. ---The new individualism is quite different from that of the nineteenth century, which stressed self-control, discipline, and traditional group values. Modern individualism focuses on the individual as the starting and ending point of life and assumes a wide zone of choice. Choice is vital, fundamental: the right to develop oneself, to build up a life uniquely suited to oneself through free, open selection among forms, models, and lifestyles. With striking clarity and force, Friedman demonstrates how the new individualism results from changes in the technological and social framework of society. Loose, unconnected, free-floating, mobile: this is the modern individual, at least in comparison with the immediate past. ---Written for the general reader as well as lawyers and legal scholars, The Republic of Choice offers keen and original observations about legal culture and the public consciousness that informs and expresses it. It is at once an attack on our weakness for ideologies and a manual for humanist action. It is the logical, compelling, and humane successor to his bestselling trilogy. Mr. Saul's philosophical trilogy - Voltaire's Bastards: The Dictatorship of Reason in the West, The Doubter's Companion: A Dictionary of Aggressive Common Sense, and The Unconscious Civilization - has had a growing impact on political thought in many countries. The Unconscious Civilization won the 1996 Governor General's Literary Award for Non-Fiction, as well as the Gordon Montador Award for Best Canadian Book on Social Issues. Mr. Saul's ideas on the nature of Canada were presented in Reflections of a Siamese Twin, which also won a Montador Award and was chosen by Maclean's magazine as one of the ten best non-fiction books of the century. He is also the author of five novels that deal with the crisis of modern power and its clash with the individual. Like his non-fiction, his novels have been translated into many languages. John Ralston Saul was born in Ottawa and studied at McGill and the University of London, where he obtained his Ph.D in 1972"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

-----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine lightly rubbed dustjacket, 321 pages, ---"This is an essential text for any library with a research collection in Chinese history and philosophy, as it is the first translation of the military/philosophy work Sun-tzu ping fa to incorporate the five chapters unearthed by archaeologists in 1972 at Yin-chueh-shan in Shantung province, China. It is also the first English translation to use the 13-chapter version of Sun-tzu found in that same dig dated 1000 years prior to previously available texts. The translator, who heads the University of Hawai'i's Center for Chinese Studies, provides an elucidating introduction to the text, the excavations, and the authorship of Sun-tzu and describes its import as a philosophical text. The translation adds the romanized form for certain key translated terms, which some readers may find intrusive. Some of the translated fragments are so brief as to be impenetrable, but their inclusion results in a level of completeness never before reached in a translation of Sun-tzu. Since there was frequent mention of this book as Gordon Gekko's primer in the film Wall Street , there may be popular interest in it as well.--- D.E. Perushek, Univ. of Tennessee Libs., Knoxville"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Good price clipped dustjacket, some chips and tears but looks quite nice overall, 225 pages, ---"From the Publisher ---The present book - though published posthumously - can be regarded as Immanuel Velikovsky's most important work. It relates his historical, geological and astronomical findings to mankind of today and its importance, in many of its facets, should not be underestimated. It is one thing to know and understand what happened in the past, but quite another to realize that those remote events still influence our thoughts, sensations and behavior. This circumstance has only become evident through the exceptional - and altogether unexpected - reaction to Velikovsky's publications. In the present book, from the viewpoint of a psychotherapist, the author guides us in coming to grips with these enduring reactions. The reach of his work goes far beyond the "Velikovsky affair" itself. After all, the suppressed trauma of humanity is still etched in our subconscious and influences us in everyday life. Thus, we are presented with a completely new and promising approach to psychology and psychotherapy which, if properly implemented also in upbringing and education, could push humanity to a new level. Politics, too, can and should be put on a new foundation based on the facts presented here. It is in this area that the collective results of the trauma have presented themselves most manifestly over the past centuries. And not least of all, another decisive impetus for our understanding of science is offered here. The standards and methods of modern science are based strongly on objectivity and all that which is objectifiable while eliminating categorically all that is subjective. But scientists are human too and mostly, owing to these precepts, with a strong inclination to objectivity and things that are objectifiable. This frequently results in shortcomings regarding their consciousness for the subjective aspects of life, particularly relating to their own thinking and feeling. This, however, is the basis for the fundamental questions of research _ questions which might be termed as "pre-scientific" and include the following: Which questions are to be studied? Which questions are regarded as worthy of study in the first place? What margins will be admitted? Which methods are considered admissible for research? Such questions have nothing to do with actual science (or, "the act of creating knowledge") but they form the basic consensus of those involved in scientific activities and thus shape the direction and scope of the cognitive process. When, due to unconscious or undetected inner processes, a scientist excludes from scientific research certain areas of life - or broaches these only with disproportionately great restrictions, or even denies their existence or importance altogether from a scientific point of view, then science itself takes damage and its importance and credibility for society is greatly diminished. It is not without reason that for years we have been witnessing the troubling tendency of science to put itself less and less in the service of people. Indeed, society and the individual is being subordinated to and aligned with certain abstract "scientific" principles. It can only be hoped that the new edition of this book will unleash an unfettered discussion, allowing us to leave behind the burdens and constraints that have conditioned us for far too many generations"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo
